Ted's Big Ride---Day One

HOME to Cabins, WV
April 30, 2006

Well, the day got off to a little late start due to the 'The Big Packing Job.' Good news, EVERYTHING I planned on taking I got on the bike, WOW. Now only time will tell if I thought of everything. I hit the road at precisely 1:21:21 PM EDT.
Plan distance: 188 miles
Plan time at posted speed limit: 5 hours 33 minutes

Actual distance:  Today=208 miles,    Total=208 miles

Average Miles/Gallon: 46.1
Average Price/Gallon: $3.069
1:21:05 PM Leaving home loaded for (hopefully not a real) BEAR.
3:46:54 PM My first entry into West Virginia. As most always happens, things come up. As I was approaching Wardensville on Rt 55, there was smoke...LOTS OF SMOKE. The center of town was on fire, and, therefore, the road thru town was closed in both directions. Local, friendly volunteers gave me directions for an optional way around rather than wait for who knows how long. That's the good news...the flip side was a lovely ride (detour) of about 50 miles. North (the wrong direction) up Rt 239 to 50, west thru Romney and then South on Rt 28 back to Moorefield.
4:20:22 PM Very nice photo op availed itself as I was leaving Wardensville.
4:39:00 PM The oldest county.
4:55:20 PM This a pretty tree-lined section.
5:14:19 PM The lovely downtown Post Office at Shanks, WV.
5:31:40 PM An early billboard for the ever-popular (here in WV] Mail Pouch Tobacco.
8:09:53 PM My first attempt at camping out. I got all set up here before dark and started this day's log. At 9PM in the dark, some guys stopped by in a truck and said the caretaker of the park did not want anyone camping here. I cannot see trying to load the bike in the dark, so I'm hoping they don't return and force me to move on. It's getting cold out now, so I'm going to turn in and hope for the best.
