Ted's Big Ride---Day Sixteen

Camarillo, CA to Pleasanton, CA
May 15, 2006

Today is the day to ride up the fabled Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Hopefully many splendors await. I'm traveling to my Cousin Paula's to have a visit with her and her husband David (a Harley biking couple).
Plan distance: 385 miles
Plan time at posted speed limit: 8 hours 31 minutes

Actual distance:  Today=389 miles,    Total=4,407 miles

Average Miles/Gallon: 44.1
Average Price/Gallon: $3.61

11:40:51 AM Leaving Camarillo, I traveled up California Rt 101 through Santa Barbara heading for the my entry into Rt 1 at San Luis Obispo.

The route is marked with the symbol of a Old Mission Bell.

2:28:29 PM Finally reaching my entry onto The Pacific Coast Highway
2:31:18 PM Here, just North of San Luis Obispo, the road was wide open although the clouds seemed a little low.
3:05:49 PM Next stop along the way was at San Simeon. Here, the Hearst Castle is located about 5 miles above the town. Near the entrance off Rt 1, is a very nice visitor center with all amenities, including lots of eating venues.
3:35:31 PM PM The site is operated by the California Park Service in a very visitor friendly way. You park at the base welcome center and take a park service bus up into the hills. As you can see from my time hacks, I did not waste any time "getting into the program." Also visible, unfortunately, is the dreaded fog. Yes, today the visibility was very poor. You could not see the ocean from the hilltop, but the estate was lovely.

3:38:46 PM Leaving the bus and walking up to the main entry stairs. The fog lends a touch of mystery to the experience.
