Ted's Big Perimeter Ride - Day 42

Today, I headed for Meteor Crater, the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert. It was a nice day, not too hot and all was fine. I arrived at the Crater site at about 1pm, watched the introductory film and took the guided tour around parts of the rim. It is a Big hole.

About another hour East is one of the entrances to the combined Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. The Park was SO MUCH larger than what I remember from my brief stop in 1969. Or maybe I appreciate it so much more now than when I was 23 years old. Anyway, well worth the stop.

I made it safely to my friends, Don & Jean Jones. Claudia will be arriving Tuesday, and we will meet up with our Australian friends, Kirsty & Geoff on Wednesday. Then off to Santa Fe for some opera, Taos for some other fun and sightseeing, and some R&R from the bike saddle for me. I'll try to keep the post alive, but free time will be in short supply I'm sure.

Panorama of Meteor Crater

Created some 50,000 years ago when a meteor hit the Earth at about 26,000 mph. It is estimated that it was only 150 feet across, yet created this crater 700 ft deep and 4,000 feet across.

One of the local crater inhabitants - an Eastern Collared Lizard. Diurnal, often seen basking on large rocks in mid-morning sun. Hibernates during cold months of winter/late fall. At top speeds this lizard lifts its forelimbs off the ground and runs on its hind legs. Lays a clutch of up to 14 eggs in spring or summer.
